It’s true that the people really do make Glasgow so it is no surprise that the city is an excellent place to buy a home and raise a family. When compared with Edinburgh, Glasgow can often get overlooked but it’s important to remember that the city is rich in history with amazing architecture, bars and restaurants. Not only that, the average house price in Edinburgh is much higher than Glasgow at £270,000 in comparison to £180,000. So, we’ve put together a guide on the best areas in the city for buying your first family home.

East Dunbartonshire

Located slightly further north of the city, East Dunbartonshire is home to towns such as Milngavie and Bearsden. It only takes twenty minutes on a train or bus to get straight into the city making it attractive to those who want to go between small-town tranquility and big-city bustle. Milngavie in particular is excellent as it has plenty of leisure facilities, parks and the West Highland Way. You can access beautiful walking trails and stunning countryside making it appealing for those who want some serenity in their lives. In addition, Bearsden has the best non-private schools such as Bearsden Academy and Boclair Academy which are both well known for producing excellent results and having low rates of bullying. However, the value of properties tend to be higher here in comparison to the rest of Glasgow with an average house price of £350,000.

The West End

North of the Clyde you can also find Glasgow’s West End – a quirky area with plenty of bars, cool vintage shops and restaurants. Broomhill is excellent for families who still want to feel like they’re living in a city but with less traffic and less people. Its traditional sandstone tenement buildings and large townhouses are sought after by families looking to move to the area. There’s plenty for kids to do such as taking a trip to the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum which is free to enter and full of activities for every age group. Or, if it’s a gorgeous day, you have access to plenty of parks such as Kelvingrove and the Botanic Gardens which tend to be full of kids making it an ideal spot to run around with your little ones. The cost of houses here are pretty average at around £222,000 but you tend to receive really good value for money in terms of the type of building and the number of rooms it has. Finally, there are a lot of highly reputable schools in the West End including Notre Dame Primary School and Highland Secondary School.

Newton Mearns

Newton Mearns is a leafy suburb found in the Southside of Glasgow making it attractive to those looking for a family home. It is situated slightly further out of the city but it only takes around fifteen minutes to get into the city centre via the M77. There’s plenty to do here with an array of leisure centers, cafes and parks. It’s only ten minutes drive from Silverburn shopping centre which has a cinema and plenty of toy shops. You can also easily access Troon within twenty minutes if you’re keen for a walk with the little ones by the seaside. Newton Mearns has excellent academic facilities including four primary schools, three high schools and an independent school therefore you have plenty to choose from when looking at where to send your children. Finally, the cost of properties in Newton Mearns average at £340,000 but you tend to find a lot of larger properties and plenty of newer builds which means you receive a lot of value for your initial investment.

Hamilton

Finally, Hamilton is a good option when looking for family friendly areas. Although it is slightly further out of the city it is an excellent option for those who want the benefits of a large city but the ambience of a small town. Hamilton has plenty to offer such as a cinema, shops and restaurants. There’s plenty for kids to do including ice skating or taking a trip to the Hamilton Water Palace which is a great day out. The Water Palace has lots of of flumes, a wave pool and even an outdoor swimming pool for the warmer months. It’s also only a twenty minute car ride to The Glasgow Fort which has an abundance of shops and restaurants all under one roof. Furthermore, the schools in Hamilton get a good name, in particular St Cuthbert’s Primary School and St Andrew’s and St Bride’s High School. Fortunately, the average house price in Hamilton is much lower at £144,000 making it an excellent choice if you’re looking to find a modern house with plenty of bedrooms at an affordable price.
