Where to Live in Glasgow

An Area Guide to Glasgow

As Scotland’s largest city, Glasgow is packed full of culture and fantastic things to do. If you are moving to Glasgow take a look at this short guide to some of our favourite areas.

For Families

The West End of Glasgow is probably one of the most popular residential areas with beautiful architecture and plentiful green spaces. Jordanhill and Hillhead, in the sought after G12 postcode, are particularly family friendly with elegant stone built townhouses sitting within the catchment area of Jordanhill, ranked the best school in Scotland. Hyndland, Dowanhill, Kelvinside and Kelvindale are also very popular family friendly areas with excellent transport links to the City Centre, but with this popularity comes the predictably hefty price tag on property.

Up and Coming

Timeout recently voted Dennistoun, in the East End of Glasgow, one of the “Coolest Neighbourhoods in the World”. The arrival of young professionals over the last decade has seen a total transformation in the area. Local initiatives such as the Zero Waste Market and Alexandra Park’s Food Forest help give Dennistoun a buzzy alternative vibe while also remaining affordable.

The South Side of Glasgow has become more and more popular with young professionals and families in recent years being dubbed the “New West End”. Sought after areas like Shawlands and Strathbungo have some great restaurants, cafes and lovely green spaces and benefit from good transport links to Glasgow City Centre.

With mass redevelopment planned at Glasgow Harbour and the nearby Old Western Infirmary site, we predict the neighbouring area of Partick will hugely benefit. Glasgow University have plans for one of Scotland’s biggest education infrastructure projects not just for academic buildings but including retail, leisure and residential spaces too. On the other side of the river, near Glasgow’s Science Centre, a mammoth 52 hectare development is planned –one of the largest waterfront projects in the UK – so watch this space.

Clockwork’s Favourites

The area of Finnieston, voted one of the “hippest places to live” in the UK, is a firm favourite throughout Glasgow. Dubbed a culinary hub Finnieston is packed full of bars and restaurants making it a hugely popular place for young professionals.

Finally we couldn’t write about areas in Glasgow without mentioning Milngavie and Bearsden home to Clockwork’s busy Glasgow branch. Boasting some of the best schools in Scotland Milngavie and Bearsden are firm family favourites and the bustling town centre even has a Waitrose. Milngavie is known for being the start of the West Highland Way and with beautiful Mugdock Country Park close by there is plenty to do for individuals and families who want to escape the city.
