How to Keep Calm when Moving During the Christmas Period

An Overview

Moving home over the Christmas period sounds like a recipe for disaster but it’s also true that more than 100,000 moves will take place in the UK this December. Christmas is one of the most stressful times of the year and if you add a move into the mix everything can become a bit overwhelming. Luckily, we’ve put together a list of ways to keep calm throughout this busy time.

  1. Plan Early

Step one is to plan everything out well in advance of your removal date. It’s a good idea to make a detailed timeline to ensure everything runs smoothly and make sure everyone in the chain such as estate agents and solicitors know that you want to complete before Christmas. In addition to this it’s advisable to contact a reputable removals company to carry out your move. At Clockwork Removals we have been helping people move in sun, rain and snow for more than 25 years. We are committed to ensuring all moves take place no matter the weather. Our BAR accreditation ensures your move is carried out in the safest and most efficient way possible by our expertly trained staff.

  1. Get the Christmas Shopping Done

Our next step is to get all of the Christmas shopping done months in advance. You can start buying small items here and there each month and then store them in a location where the kids can’t see them such as in a family member’s home. That way, you’re not adding to the volume of goods being moved and will in turn reduce time and money. Once you have moved home, if you’re ordering anymore presents, a top tip is to delete your old address from the auto-fill section of different websites that you may have used previously.

  1. Change of Address

Tip number three is to remember to notify people of your change of address such as friends, family and utility providers. A good idea is to send out Christmas cards nice and early with your new address written in each, as well as contacting your local post office to utilise their redirection service. Let your utility companies know you’re moving as well so that all important mail will be directed to the new home and to ensure your gas and electric is set up properly.

  1. Keep the Essentials Handy

In addition, we advise you to keep all the essentials looked out and packed separately. Pack into a box some kitchen utensils, the kids’ bedlinen, and some snacks. Then transport this, as well as the TV, over to the new house first and keep them aside to set up. This will ensure your home feels cosy and you can keep the kids entertained on a stressful day.

  1. Organise the Christmas Decorations

Finally, organise all of the Christmas decorations before you move and pack them together. Then when it comes to the big day we advise you to move these into the new home first and keep them with the essentials. Give the kids the task of decorating the new home to keep them occupied which will let you get on with the more pressing issues of moving home. But remember, if you don’t get everything unpacked it is okay to leave it until after Christmas which gives you time to relax with the kids and make the most of the festivities.
