Tips for a Safe and Sound New Home

Home Security

When moving home there can be so many things to think about such as notifying your utility providers, organising a removal company, or even packing. But that doesn’t mean you can neglect your new home’s security as well as the safety of your family. On moving day it is advisable to have a few things in place in order to keep your new home protected. With more than 400,000 burglaries in the UK each year we figured it was a good idea to put together a list of ways to improve your home’s security.

Install an Alarm

Getting an alarm is just the first step but actually using it is what you need to remember! For some reason people install alarm systems in their homes yet never use them, but it’s important to remember that by doing this you are actually invalidating your home insurance if anything was to ever happen. We also recommend changing your alarm pass-code regularly so that no one can learn the code and use it to enter your home freely. There are various alarms you can purchase but we recommend one with a Digital Door Viewer attached which is a device that allows the homeowner to see who is at their door before answering. It’s an excellent alarm system for larger families with lots of kids as it puts their safety first.

Update the Locks

When you move into your new home it can be easy to forget just how many people hold keys to the property – relatives, friends, neighbours, even the gardener. On moving day we would recommend changing the locks so as to ensure all of your belongings will remain safe and sound. A BS3621 lock is a necessary requirement from most insurance companies as it is a British standard as the locks are tested against burglary techniques such as picking and drilling. Invest in a Safe

You should always do your best to hide high value items such as iPads, jewellery and car keys – put them in a drawer so as to avoid temptation for lurking burglars. However, if you have a lot of expensive belongings we would recommend investing in a quality safe and placing it out of sight such as in a cupboard. That way it is more difficult for any intruders to find and if they do they will be unable to access it. It can also be used for any private documents such as wills, birth certificates and passports.

Install Security Lights

Having a smart outdoor lighting system can be a great way of deterring potential intruders as they tend to work best in the black of night. It’s ideal to have a light that comes on when it’s dark around the side or back of the house as these are spaces where burglars can hide easily. There are also lighting systems you can install inside the home which turn on from time to time to make the house appear as though it is being lived in. These are a great addition to your security system especially when away on long holidays. However don’t forget about the environment when choosing such lights, these days it is a lot easier to find cost effective and eco-friendly lighting systems.
