Top Tips for Moving House in Winter

Moving House this Winter

After a relatively mild Christmas, the temperature has plummeted and we are bracing ourselves for a very chilly January. With this in mind we thought we would put together some top tips on moving house in the cold winter (and possibly snowy) weather.

Before Move Day

During the cold, rainy winter months you want a mover with the knowledge, experience and equipment to move you safely in bad weather. Make sure your mover comes prepared with protective covers to safeguard wooden flooring, carpets and furniture from the elements. If the weather is very bad experienced movers will also come equipped with shovels, grit and salt.

When booking your move make sure you request the crew start as early as possible. In the depths of winter you want to make the most of natural light so starting early will get you ahead of the game.

It is also worth calling your agent to request instructions for the boiler in advance so you know how to put it on once you get to your new home. You don’t want to be left with no heating or hot water after a long day of moving.  If you know you are moving in as the previous occupiers are moving out you could also request they leave it on when they move out.

On Move Day

Make sure you have planned your journey to your new home, especially if it is a distance move. You don’t want to get the removal vehicle packed and then find you have no screen wash for a long drive on salty roads! If your movers have packed for you they will probably have left you the necessities such as tea, coffee and mugs. If you are packing yourself make sure you pack a box of supplies with a torch, kettle, hot drinks, mugs, soups and maybe even a hot water bottle! You might want to also think of packing a small suitcase of bedding, towels and a change of clothes so you don’t have to rummage through boxes on your first night in your new home.
