News Excitement is Building at Clockwork for Glasgow 2014

On the 9th November 2007 the General Assembly of the Commonwealth Games Federation announced that the City of Glasgow would host the Commonwealth Games in 2014. Time has flown by since then and after a successful Olympics down south in 2012 we are all looking forward to the 23^rd July and the start of the Commonwealth Games 2014.

The Games are the 3^rd largest international multisport event in the world and have been held every 4 years since 1930. From canoeing to cricket, 6500 athletes and officials from 70 countries take part in 17 sports throughout the 11 days. With 250 medal events in total and over a million tickets sold we can expect tens of thousands of visitors flooding to the city throughout July and August.

At Clockwork Removals we have already experienced the impact such a huge event can have on transport systems and during the Olympics it was business as usual for our London branches. That said we learnt a lot during the summer of 2012 and our crews in London have passed on the knowledge gleaned during that time to our teams in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Sporting events are spread across 14 venues throughout Glasgow, Edinburgh and Angus. Below we have put together a list of the venues so you can be prepared for what is happening… and where.

• Athletes’ Village – Set in Glasgow’s East End, and home to the athletes and officials during the Games, this is a purpose built, low carbon village amid 35 hectares of one of Europe’s largest regeneration areas.
• Barry Buddon Shooting Centre – This will be the home of all of the shooting events throughout the Games. The site is located within the Ministry of Defence’s training camp, located in Carnoustie on Scotland’s rugged west coast.
• Cathkin Braes Mountain Bike Trails – Making use of the varied terrain of Cathkin Braes Country Park these expertly designed trails are located in Glasgow’s South Side.
• Celtic Park – North of the River Clyde towards the East end of Glasgow and home to Celtic Football Club, Celtic Park will host the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony.
• Emirates Arena including the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome – Situated in the East End of Glasgow the Emirates Arena will play host to the Badminton whilst the velodrome, named in honour of the UK’s most successful Gold-medal winning Olympian, will provide a 250-metre track for the fast paced cycling events.
• Glasgow National Hockey Centre – Based at Glasgow Green, Glasgow’s oldest public park, this new development will be home to the hockey and the park will also host the start and finish points of the Marathon and the Road Cycling and Time Trial events.
• Hampden Park – Home to Scotland’s national football team this iconic stadium, located to the south side of Glasgow, will provide an unbeatable venue for the Track and Field Athletics competitions and the Commonwealth Games Closing Ceremony.
• Ibrox Stadium – Just over two miles from Glasgow’s City Centre is Ibrox Stadium, a name synonymous with the famous Rangers Football Club and home to the Rugby Seven’s during the Commonwealth Games.
• Kelvingrove Lawn Bowls Centre – This recently upgraded centre, on the north of the River Clyde, will host all the Lawn Bowls competitions throughout the Games.
• Royal Commonwealth Pool – With a diving Pool to meet international standards, the Royal Commonwealth Pool is located only 50 minutes from Glasgow in Edinburgh, just a stone’s throw from the famous castle.
• SECC Precinct – Just less than two miles to the west of Glasgow is the huge SECC Precinct. Not only will it be the main International Broadcast and Press Centre for the Games but it will also host six sports including; Gymnastics, Boxing, Judo, Netball, Wrestling and Weightlifting/Powerlifting.
• Scotstoun Sports Campus – Located approximately four miles to the west of Glasgow is the multi-faceted Scotstoun Sports Campus. Scotstoun will be home to both the Table Tennis and Squash competitions throughout the Games.
• Strathclyde Country Park – This satellite venue is 14 miles from the city and will provide the space needed for the Triathlon.
• Tollcross International Swimming Centre – Just over three miles to the east of Glasgow is this newly refurbishing and extended swimming centre. The existing 50 metre, 10-lane pool has been joined by a new 50m, six-lane warm-up and training pool, ensuring world-class facilities fit for the Games.
