The summer is the busiest time of year for us at Clockwork but with the World Cup, Ascot, Wimbledon and the exciting run up to the Commonwealth Games we are managing to squeeze in some sport. Now that every one of the World Cup’s 32 nations has played their first game we thought we would put together a blog based on the top sides so far. What would it be like to move to one of the top 5 countries in the World Cup? Read on and find out.

 

5. Columbia

• Capital City – Bogotá, known as “The Athens of South America” is one of the largest capital cities in the world.
• National Dish – Ajiaco is a soup typically made with chicken, three varieties of potato and the herb commonly referred to in Colombia as guascas.
• Famous Landmark – Monserrate is a mountain 10,341 ft above sea levelwith stunning vista’s of Colombia’s capital, it is also a Pilgrim destinations with a beautiful historic church devoted to “El Señor Caído.
• Known For – Coffee. Colombia is regarded as producing some of the finest coffee in the world and is the third largest producer on earth.
• Best Footie Player – Carlos “El Pibe” Valderrama. Carlos played in 111 international matches, making him the most-capped player in Colombia’s football history.
• Fast Fact – The name “Colombia” is derived from the last name of Christopher Columbus.

4. Italy

• Capital City – Rome, often defined as the capital of two states as Vatican City makes it the only existing example of a country within a city.
• National Dish – The three Ps; Pasta, Polenta and Pizza. Three versatile ingredients which make up the foundations for an infinite number of dishes.
• Famous Landmark – The Colosseum is the largest amphitheatre in the world and dates back to 40 AD. This fantastic and stunning structure could hold between 50,000 and 80,000 spectators during gladiatorial contests, plays and executions.
• Known For – It’s culinary experience.  From amazing liquors like Limoncello to the infamous aperitif, Campari and the aforementioned three P’s. When it comes to eating and drinking, it is hard to beat Italy!
• Best Footie Player – Dino Zoff, the oldest winner ever of the World Cup, which he earned as captain of the Italian team in 1982 at the age of 40. He was named the 3rd greatest goalkeeper of the 20th century and holds the record for the longest playing time for not conceding any goals in international tournaments – 1142 minutes.
• Fast Fact – Pizza is one of the very few words which is understood internationally.

3. France

• Capital City – Paris, “The City of Love” is one of the largest cities in Europe.
• National Dish – Une Crêpe, whether you have them sweet or savoury, this thin pancake is absolutely delicious.
• Famous Landmark – The Eiffel Tower is one of the most recognizable structures in the world and the most visited paid monument on Earth with millions heading up the tower each year.
• Known For – Art. France is home to some of the most famous artists of all time including; Monet, Renoir, Manet, Degas and Cezanne.
• Best Footie Player – Zinedine Zidane aka ZiZouis, best known for his technique on the pitch was named the best European footballer of the past 50 years by UEFA.
• Fast Fact – Apparently there is only one stop sign in the whole of Paris!

2. Netherlands

• Capital City – Amsterdam, ranked 2nd best city to live in 2012!
• National Dish – Stamppot, a winter dish full of vegetables, potatoes and meat all mashed together in one delicious stew.
• Famous Landmark – Keukenhof Gardens is the world’s largest flower garden with approximately seven million flower bulbs planted annually in the park.
• Known For – Cycling. The Dutch have 32,000 km of cycle paths throughout their cities and a number of inter-city bicycle paths across the nation.
• Best Footie Player – Johan Cruyff won the Ballon d’Or three times and led the Netherlands national team to the final of the 1974 FIFA World Cup where he also received the Golden Ball as player of the tournament.
• Fast Fact – 26% of the Netherlands is under sea level.

1. Germany

• Capital City – Berlin is the second biggest city in Europe.
• National Dish – Bratwurst, a sausage usually composed of veal, pork or beef which is grilled or pan fried and sometimes cooked in broth or beer.
• Famous Landmark – Neuschwanstein, the ultimate fairytale castle is situated in Bavaria and was the inspiration for the Sleeping Beauty castles in the Disneyland parks.
• Known For – Oktoberfest. Known as the world’s largest funfair this 16-day festival is located in Munich and has more than six million people from around the world attending every year.
• Best Footie Player – Franz Beckenbauer, the only man to have won the World Cup as a player (1974) and as a manager (1990).
• Fast Fact – The Bundesautobahnen (motorways) of Germany are world renowned for their lack of speed limit.
